Det finns bra förklaringar till varför kiropraktisk behandling fungerar. Teorier som bygger på kända, dokumenterade och accepterade fysiologiska och mekaniska funktioner. Förklaringar som bygger på vetenskap och beprövad erfarenhet. Det är inte kotor ur led, tryck på nerver, placebo, för korta ben eller blockerade energier. En kiropraktor behandlar funktionella problem, inte strukturella. Exempel på strukturella problem är skelettskada, diskbråck, mjukdelsrupturer. Exempel på funktionella problem är nedsatt rörlighet i leder, förändrat inflöde av nervsignaler från leder, ligament och muskulatur, förändrad motoriskt kontroll, störd koordination och balans. Funktionella störningar kan efter en tid ge strukturella skador därav betonas ofta vikten av förebyggande behandling.
